How Utilities Remain Relevant as Consumers Make Major Energy Commitments

Recent years have brought a significant succession of developments in the energy sector. Distributed energy resources, from solar and storage to smart buildings and connected appliances, are rapidly proliferating, allowing consumers to manage their energy use much more efficiently and effectively. On-site generation via increasingly competitive technologies like solar and storage is making the business case for self-generation more compelling. The transportation fleet is being electrified as EV technologies scale up. ESCOs and IPPs are offering an ever increasing suite of solutions for energy users to manage their energy bills. The convergence of all these solutions is causing the industry to take another look at the traditional utility business models of the past and how those organizations can effectively manage this new grid.

In this session, speakers from leading WA utilities, Tuan Tran from Seattle City Light and Will Odell from Snohomish PUD, will share how they are deploying smart grid solutions to maintain their relevance to the “new” electricity consumer, where they see smart grid related activity on the customer side, and how utilities in the region can evolve and adapt to the new realities of the energy marketplace. The interactive conversation will also feature major partners and customers, Daniel Kirschen from the University of Washington and Brian Janous from Microsoft, as the group looks at ways that utilities can work with customers who are taking on major energy efforts.
