National and Local Experts Converge in Seattle for Symposium on Demand Response for the Pacific Northwest Electrical Grid

Smart Grid Northwest hosts a sold-out Demand Response Symposium with help from Northwest Power and Conservation Council and dozens of regional utilities and industry leaders.

PORTLAND, OR – September 21, 2016 – Smart Grid Northwest, a trade organization for the smart grid industry in the Pacific Northwest, announced that its upcoming Demand Response Symposium has sold out one week before the event. The Symposium features over 40 local and national demand response experts explaining how to improve the efficiency and resiliency of the electrical grid for Northwest companies and consumers by leveraging flexible demand side resources.

Taking place on September 28, 2016 in Seattle, Washington, the Symposium is targeted for leaders at regional utilities who want to learn more about developing and implementing demand response. They will enjoy a full day of focused discussions and presentations as well as networking with over 150 industry professionals with interests and experience in demand response solutions.

The Symposium welcomes speakers from Bonneville Power Administration, Comverge, Honeywell, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Nest, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Schneider Electric , Puget Sound Energy, Portland General Electric and many other utilities, corporations, research labs, and utility trade groups.

Northwest companies, utilities, and government agencies become members of Smart Grid Northwest to be more aware of and active in demand response and smart grid activities and events in our region.

Smart Grid Northwest is hosting the Demand Response Symposium in collaboration with the Northwest Power and Conservation Council and dozens of other regional utilities, demand response providers, and other stakeholders. This symposium will also include the participation of the Pacific Northwest Demand Response Project, which since 2005 has been the primary forum for researchers, regulators, and utilities to share information, build best practices, and overcome barriers to demand response in the Northwest. The NW Planning Council is accelerating work in this topic area with the start of regular meetings for the Demand Response Advisory Council.

Demand response improves the efficiency and resiliency of the electrical grid by reducing peak demand, shifting loads so energy generation and use align better, and complementing supply side resources, including variable ones like wind and solar power. Demand response resources provide the energy system with flexibility, which can go beyond the reduction of peak usage and can include higher system utilization, deferred or reduced energy and/or infrastructure energy investments, and a stronger ability to integrate distributed resources. As a result, DR is often a least-cost solution for meeting peak power and other energy and capacity demands in the future. The Northwest Power and Conservation Council’s Seventh Power Plan, issued earlier this year, recommends that at least 600 megawatts of demand response be implemented to meet the region’s power needs.
